International workcamp in Austria in 2006
Working and living in the Alps are well known Austrian clichés, but in reality life there is hard. The Austrian mountain farming and highland agriculture are under considerable economic and social stresses. Falling food prices, mechanical production and movement of labour endanger the 4000 year old tradition. Alpine farming is not just a social tradition, but is also very important for a healthy mountain ecosystem and a rich biodiversity. For 20 years the Austrian Alpine Association (OeAV) has been supporting people and the environment in the Alps. The volunteers helped to reconstruct alpine cottages in a traditional way and clean alpine meadows from natural cover and brushes to get back quality meadows for cattle-breeding.
