Where is SCI going?

Setting peace as the ultimate goal of an organisation can often seem too huge and difficult to reach. So, SCI focuses on one method to work towards this goal - Intercultural Exchange. However, this is still such a broad area, and it is necessary for us to prioritise our actions. In order to work effectively we need guidelines to help us achieve our goals. Thus the Strategic Plan of SCI was developed.

Our Goals 2004 - 2009

4 main Objectives for the years 2004 - 2009 were adopted by the 2003 International Committee Meeting in Seoul.

1. To Stimulate more Pro - active Peace Work within SCI

All SCI work contributes to peace in it’s own way - Workcamps where volunteers plant trees are as valuable as those where volunteers directly help people in conflict torn areas. However, SCI has decided to increase the focus placed on those camps that have a directly peaceful impact - for example developing more workcamps in conflict areas and also organising camps that have objection to the ideology of war as the primary focus.

2. To Network and Cooperate with Like - Minded Organisations

SCI has a lot of unique experience and knowledge that we would like to share with other organisations. For example, we have a long history of working with ordinary citizens and at a grass - roots level at the same time as coordinating at an international level. Also, our simple strategy of using workcamps to raise awareness is unique and powerful. By sharing with other organisations we hope to also gain knowledge, strengthen our weaknesses and put peace issues on the agenda of umbrella organisations.

3. To Improve the Quality and Level of Peace Education within SCI

All our workcamps are a form of peace education but over the coming years we hope to really make them learning experiences for participants. Workcamps will have more planned education sessions where volunteers will be made aware of SCI as a broad Peace Movement. They will be encouraged to discuss Peace; what it is, how it can be achieved, what are the obstacles etc. There will be a Peace Education Network who will facilitate the sharing of these ideas and associated resources.

4. To Improve the Way we Work

We must improve our general functioning. This involves:
Better communications between branches, international bodies, working groups etc. as well as a strategy to retain volunteers and get them involved in activities beyond workcamps and Securing our financial position for the long term.
One of the steps towards improving the way we work is also developing a  Volunteer Management System for SCI at international level. You can actively support VMS by joining the discussion at the forum.
