2010 is the year that we celebrate ninety years of promoting peace, intercultural understanding, mutual respect and international solidarity through concrete voluntary actions! In 1920 a small international group gathered to repair a war-torn village on the French and German border. This first action started a movement of international volunteers called Service Civil International (SCI). Nowadays SCI is one of the world’s largest and oldest international volunteer organizations dedicated to promoting cultures of peace through concrete volunteer work & exchanges.
Unity in diversity
Throughout this year we plan different activities and events in order to remember and reflect upon our work, values and achievements during almost a century. We see our anniversary as an opportunity for more cooperation and cohesion amongst SCI-branches, activists and working groups. Besides, by placing national and international activities and events under one international ‘SCI 90 years–banner’ we support bot national and international levels by creating more visibility for SCI as an international organization that is united in all its diversity.

Already this summer there will be a series of very interesting work camps, that form part of the
Anti War Action which aims to reflect on SCI values and methods from the very beginning, as well as on the richness of experiences gathered during 90 years of promoting cultures of peace. The special workcamps will all have an intensive study element on peace, conflict resolution, intercultural understanding and tolerance. Apart from this there is the
Travelling Exhibition about the history of SCI and its founder, Pierre Ceresole. This is planned to start in November. The exhibition will also include a video production from the Anti-War Action. At branch level there is also a lot going on. For more information please see the
