SCI Italy is promoting since last year projects and workcamps related to the remembrance of Nazi-fascist persecution against Roma, Sinti and LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) people.
Our aim is to contribute to remembering what occurred during the Nazi-fascist period, to some of those who were persecuted but seldom are mentioned as victims. Through the remembrance, our aim is also to help reflecting about the current situation of discrimination of both LGBT and Roma people, thus contributing to build future cohesion.
The first project, "The forgotten among the forgotten 1 – Remembering the past to build future cohesion" was promoted by SCI Italy in cooperation with SCI Romania and CESD (European Center of Studies on Discrimination - Italy). It was supported by the European Commission in the frame of the programme “Europe for Citizens”.
The project was carried out in 2009 and dealt with the remembrance of the Nazi-fascist persecution against LGBT people and Roma and Sinti people. The project has foreseen the organization of 3 events: in Bologna, about the issue of LGBT people; in Bucharest, about Roma persecution and present situation; and in Rome, the final event, about both themes.
The project was recently awarded by the European Commission and selected for a conference exhibition on "EU Projects in favour of the ROMA Community", to take place on the 10 and 11 March 2010 in Brussels. Moreover, the project has been selected to be included in the exhibition catalogue, where a selection of 30 good practice projects will be presented.
“The forgotten among the forgotten 2 – An in-depth in the places of Roma and Sinti persecution” is presently being carried out. It foresees the organization of 4 events throughout 2010: two in Italy (Cagliari and Rome), one in Romania (Bucharest) and one in Germany (Bonn). Project partners are SCI Germany, SCI Romania, Mundi Romanì (Hungary), Romà Onlus (Italy) and Centrul Naţional de Cultură a Romilor - Romano Kher (Romania). Like the first project, it is supported by the European Commission in the frame of the programme “Europe for Citizens”.
