Reconnections

IVS-GB (Brittish branch of SCI) has started a newsletter called ‘Reconnections’. It aims to reconnect twentieth century volunteers (from the 50s, 60s 70s and 80s) with others who were volunteering at the same time or in the same place.
We asked former IVS members and volunteers to come forward with the stories of their volunteering experience, either abroad or in Britain, and had a pleasing, amusing and interesting response. ‘Reconnections’ aims to provide a platform for volunteers to get in touch with others who have similar experiences. The magazine also has a list of contact details for all those who are on the mailing list.

Since starting this news letter we have found that there are groups of volunteers who are still in contact and have regular meetings. The news letter has allowed these groups to find out of each others existence and get in contact.

As well as the volunteer experience features, there are also calls for information or support to find particular people. There are book reviews of books written about SCI and its volunteers. And it is a great way to see old photo’s from past projects. Volunteers who write articles normally have a photo or two they are quite proud of to go with their articles. We have featured books like “Breaking Down Barriers” 1945-1975: 30 years of voluntary service for peace, Volunteering for Peace: Relief work in Europe 1944 to 1949 and Back to the Bush: the first British LTV to Africa revisits the area after 40 years.

Anyone who would like to be involved with this project can contact the IVS Office at info@ivsgb.org
