On 6 April 2009, a heavy earthquake touched the entire region of Abruzzo, in Italy. Over 300 people died, more than 1600 inhabitants have been wounded, and over 65.000 have been displaced from their homes into emergency camps.
SCI Italy will organise six international volunteer projects in Abruzzo this summer to support the efforts authorities and local communities make to recover after the disaster.
Three of them will mainly focus on reconstruction, cleaning, protecting and archiving old medieval stones together with the inhabitants of two of the most affected small villages in the region.
Moreover, thirteen local organisations have joined SCI Italy in the preparation of three animation projects. This will give the opportunity to more than 150 youngsters, which still live with their families in emergency camps, to join every day “Camp Murata Gigotti”, for sport and other activities prepared for them by international volunteers from other SCI branches and partner organisation all over the world.
